Performance times for Tribal Fest!

There are still quite a few classes available (register at www.blacksheepbellydance.com) as well as there are people selliing their sold out classes on the Blacksheep Bellydance tribe. This is an amazing list of performers and I am honored to be part of this event for the second year in a row.

Please note the schedule is subject to last minute changes!

PERFORMANCE PROGRAM
TRIBAL FEST: NUMBER 9, NUMBER 9 (3x3)
FRIDAY MAY 15, 2009

Doors Open at 4:30 p.m. for shopping, seating and partaking of our delicious food and drink! And PLEASE use the trash and recycle containers supplied for this purpose, please don’t leave garbage under your seat for someone else to pick up after you. Mahalo for your kokua!

5:00-5:08 - Fellow Pagans and Numerologists in the house understand the deeper meanings and significance of this number, and that 9 is also 3x3. So this year, for our opening Invocation and Celebration we have THREE dancers, ALL TF Instructors past or present, who truly “get” why this is important. The rest of us can take our word for it, LOL! They are, in alphabetical order: Anaar (CA), Asharah (VA) and Tempest (NJ)

5:10-5:19 - Tribal Reflections (KS)

5:20-5:24 - Akasha of Afsana (MN)

5:25-5:32 - Shakti Dance Movement (HI)

5:34-5:39 - Shoshanna (CA)

9:17-9:27 - Princess Farhana (CA) TF#9 Instructor!

9:29-9:39 - Romka (WA, DC) TF#9 Instructors! Mavi & Belladonna present their last planned duo performance as Romka here at Tribal Fest #9, sharing their unique collaborative approach to sword work before focusing on solo work. They say, “thanks Tribal Fest, the tribal community, and Kajira and Chuck for the inspiration and support.” We say, “Let’s give these ladies our appreciation and applause for years of love and support of us here at TF and beyond. Mahalo and Aloha, and we can’t wait to see what you’ll both come up with next!”

9:41-9:51 - Asharah (VA) TF#9 Instructor! Each year this incredible woman has blown me away more and more. One of our wiser-and-in-common teachers in MD, E. Artemis Mourat, told me years ago to hire Asharah before anyone else did because, “Honey, she’s got something really special and has great technical ability and the creativity needed to go far. You won’t be sorry.” Did I listen back then? No, and that is why one should *always* listen to their mentors: they’re always right! Well, all I can say is “Better late than never, and I promise to listen sooner next time.” By now, everyone knows of Asharah, or should, or will soon.

9:52-10:12 - TONIGHT’S FINALE is The Suhaila Salimpour Ensemble (CA) TF#9 Instructor! Suhaila, both Chuck and I are so happy you’ve come back to teach, perform and play with us here at Tribal Fest! We’ve both missed you. That “hiatus” was way too long! LOL!

THANKS FOR COMING! See You Tomorrow, Saturday, from 11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.

Wanna dance and have your hand percussion (finger cymbals or Turkish spoons/kashiklar)? Have a drum in the car? How about a mizmar or something bold n’ brassy? A tuba? Neys, flutes, strings from anywhere and any kind? What are you waiting for? Come on up and join us with your improvisational solo or group dance and instruments. Help us bring back the sound and feeling of a good, satisfying, improvised music-and-dance JAM! Step back in time for a bit and maybe out of your “comfort zone” and into a whole new, supportive and ecstatic space where time appears to stop as you trance out for days in the space of 45 minutes, LOL! Don’t worry, we’ll turn it down slowly so you can return to earth more easily. After all, this is simply our halfway-through-the-show intermission! Expect to see Classical dance from both countries in a masala of true Domani/Lomari (“Gypsies” of India, related to “Romani”) as well as the Romani, Gitano and Flamenco “Gypsy” cultures of Spain, with the middle ground of Belly Dance to tie it together.

8:50-9:00 - Michelle Manx presents Pin-Up Girl Belly Dance - a very tasteful, well-studied form that she has created herself. Look for poses and attitudes that bring the flavor of the fifties-style pin-ups, drive-ins, cigarette packs rolled into T-shirt sleeves and hair pomade
for the boys and Hair Spray (pun intended) for the girls. Last year was her first year to teach this creation (here at TF8) and from the applications I’ve received as well as class sign-ups, I see it’s caught on quicker than you can say “Bettie Page!” TF#9 Instructor! (TX)

5:05-5:20 - Shakra - a dynamic duo if ever there was one! TF#9 Instructors! (WA, DC)

5:23-5:33 - Frédérique - To me (Kajira), Frédérique’s background is as an “Old School Tribal Fusion Artist”, and by that I mean she was
here and participating in the co-creation of this burgeoning new style before it had a name. But the ones working on it knew it wasn’t ATS, nor was it “traditional” bellydance. Thus was born “Tribaret”. I respect her work in the development of what’s now known as Tribal Fusion and beyond, into the dancer she is today. We are so happy she taught for her 2nd time here at TF this year, and hope to see her here again. TF#9 Instructor! (CA)

5:35 - ? - TONIGHT’S FINALE features none other than THE INDIGO! You, know, those three crazy young beauties who go by the names of Rachel, Zoe and Mardi. You might think that with all the touring going on, how would they find time to create something special for us here at Tribal Fest each year? And, if you’re at all like me, you can’t wait to see what they’ve cooked up for us tonight! THANK YOU, LADIES OF THE INDIGO! YOU KNOW WE LOVE YOU!!! (CA)
